TYPES of Massage

SWEDISH MASSAGE: This is the massage commonly know for relaxation.  In 1812, a Swedish physiologist, named Henri Peter Ling developed.  The firm but gentle pressure creates relaxation, improves circulation, eases muscle aches and tension, and improves flexibility.  Massage oils or cream are used to make long, smooth strokes over the body.  Swedish is generally done on the table with the person covered by a sheet.  The part of the body being massaged is uncovered and recovered before moving on.

Sports, Deep Tissue, and Aromatherapy are branches off of Swedish Massage.

Deep Tissue Massage: This technique is used to work out chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as “adhesions”).  It targets the deeper muscles and connective tissues. With Deep Tissue massage the pressure to generally more intense, though the movements and techniques are the same as Swedish Massage.  Deep Tissue is likely to be a bit more uncomfortable, but shouldn’t hurt.  The client is free to speak up if it is too much.

Sports Massage: This is a massage designed for people involved in physical activity, but any one who is active and works out can use it.   Relaxation is not the focus, prevention and treatment of injures, and enhancing the athletic performance is the focus.

Treatment Massage: When a person is injured or has had surgery, doctors will prescribe Treatment Massage. The focus is on one special part of the body.

Hot Stone Massage: In China and India, over 3000 years ago, stone massage has being used as a soothing and healing experience. It is a style of Swedish Massage using stones heated in water or an oven. There are different sizes and shapes of stones, usually smooth basalt stones, round or oval, with varying weights. The stones are placed on the body, along the spine, stomach, and between the toes and fingers. Hot Stone Massage is gentle, but intense. The benefits are the same as Deep Tissue or Therapeutic Massage.
